I think this is the first year that the kids didn't wear their costumes until the actual day of Halloween. Usually there's trunk-or-treats, and pre school parties etc. This year was a little more low key. And it's a good thing because I didn't have them all ready to go until the day of. Not that they were hard at all, I'm just doing the bare minimum over here. We borrow Gwen's dress, already had Lindy's, Benson just wore an outfit he already had, and I found Miles's stuff at the D.I. and did some minor tweaking. They decided to be "Day of the Dead" people, which obviously correlated to "Coco" for them. I tried to steer them away from being specific characters, because that would mean more work for me. They agreed, but Benson ended up being Miguel (cause he already had those clothes) and Miles ended up being Uncle Hector.
Miles and Gwen were at their Epic day of school that day and had a Halloween party, so I took Lindy and Benson to a Halloween story time at the library and to run some other errands where they got candy. :) That night, we had Ben and Becca, and their two youngest Adeline and Alec over for dinner and trick-or-treating. It's so much funner with friends, I don't know why we haven't done it before! Bonus that they are cousins! We ate our usual sloppy joes from a pumpkin, and then hit the neighborhood. I usually stay home to pass out candy, so this was a new experience for me. We have a pretty rockin' neighborhood on Halloween! It was fun! Lindy and Alec were 2 peas in a pod. They both had the eye of the tiger and it was obvious that trick-or-treating for them was a sport, not something fun to do. Lindy's competitive nature and anxiety really shined as she tried her very hardest to keep up with all the other kids, who are all older than she is. At one point, she stubbed her toe really well while running full speed to the next house, and it hurt so bad, she had to ride in the wagon the rest of the way. She was completely horrified that she was going to miss out on the rest of the candy, until she realized that Gwen would happily pick up an extra piece of candy for her at every house, and drop it in her bucket. Whew!
The best part, in my opinion, is when the kids get home, dump out their earnings, and the sorting and trading begins. It's got to be so liberating as a kid to have this currency that you earned, that you can have complete control over, at least for a little while until the policing parents start portion controlling it all. I would be lying if I didn't mention that it brought out a lot of contention the day after Halloween, but I think it's worth it.
Lindy mothering Benson at story time, and all the time.
